Town Centre Demolition

The £100 million redevelopment of Rochdale town centre moved one step closer with the demolition of the Christian Science Church on Smith Street carried out on behalf of the owners of the site, Rochdale Development Agency, by J Freeley Ltd.

The contract involved careful removal of asbestos from the church building, demolition of the building itself, and making good the site for future redevelopment. Firstly, J Freeley demolished some outbuildings to create parking space for asbestos removal vehicles and equipment – the confined area meant there was no parking space available on-site. The main building was fully scaffolded and screened with debris netting. After lifting off the roof trusses and coping stones, the walls were progressively demolished by hand down to first floor level to ensure maximum safety. Finally, excavators and demolition machinery were brought in to mechanically demolish the rest of the building.

“The project was completed successfully and on time without any hitch by J Freeley, thanks to us working together in partnership and the flexibility of their demolition team. We were particularly happy with the professional way J Freeley carried out this project. Safety was a key concern on this project. Its location in a confined area, so close to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, meant that meticulous planning and careful demolition were vital objectives.”
