Industrial Dismantling

Waste minimisation and recycling were key issues in the demolition of a huge bus depot and other commercial buildings at a site in Walsall carried out by J Freeley Ltd. The company carried out the safe dismantling and removal of 300 tonnes of asbestos cement roof sheets from the 7,000 m2 main bus depot building. It used elevated work platforms to provide its operatives with safe access to roof areas.

The demolition resulted in a total of 2,500 tonnes of concrete and brick. All of this is being crushed and then used as recycled aggregate for a large hardstanding parking area which will form part of the redeveloped site. In addition, 90 per cent of the large amount of timbers recovered from the site will also be recycled.

“Waste management and recycling are now key issues for the demolition industry. Having worked closely with J Freeley for a long time now we are most conscious of their commitment to recycling. We appreciate that part of the time spent on pre-contract planning for every project J Freeley is involved with is now devoted to recycling and environmental issues.”
